A shiny but short-lived gift

It’s the Christmas season and Congress has given us a sparkly gift: free tuition in state universities and colleges (SUCs). It’s an P8-billion boon that could potentially improve every Filipino’s life. But as someone whose life education changed for the better, I worry that free tuition in SUCs might just be a flashy fireworks display, unable to deliver postcollege success.

PBEd engages key cities for HR development

In partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), PBEd held a Human Resource Summit in Zamboanga City last February 13, 2015. We also held a turnover ceremony for the recently completed Human Resource Development (HRD) Plan for Puerto Princesa and Greater Palawan last February 11, 2015.

The Zamboanga Summit gathered local leaders from the industry, academe and government, which included officers of industry associations and heads of higher education institutions.

Bohol creates Government-Industry-Academe Council for greater competitiveness

Bohol governor Edgardo Chatto signed an executive order creating the Bohol Government-Industry-Academe (GIA) Council) last February 5, 2015. This brings to fruition a key recommendation from the Human Resource Development (HRD) Plan for Tourism of Bohol. The GIA Council will serve as a venue to promote dialogue and increase multisectoral collaboration.

Top industry and academe leaders express support behind K-12 reform

In a discussion with the media last October 7, the National Industry-Academe Council (NIAC) called on the government to be accountable for ensuring a smooth transition to the new K-12 basic education system.

“The additional years of schooling is seen to have a positive impact on wages and the economy’s annual GDP growth,” said Dr. Ricardo Rotoras, President of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges and the Mindanao University of Science and Technology

Private, state, and local HEI heads endorse historic ‘Manila Declaration on Higher Education’

Close to 500 presidents and administrators of private, state, and local higher education institutions (HEIs) have recently expressed their commitment to sustain meaningful and productive discussions leading to the improvement of higher education in the Philippines. 

PBEd holds Industry-Academe Summits in Bohol, Pampanga, and Palawan

The Philippine Business for Education (PBed), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), held Industry-Academe (IA) Summits in the provinces of Bohol, Pampanga, and Palawan on March 24, March 27, and April 1 respectively to help build concrete partnerships to help improve the quality of higher education in the provinces.

Taking the Next Steps: Strengthening Ties Between Industry, Academe, and Government

(Mactan, Cebu) – Last January 23 – 24, 2014 around 100 leaders of industry, academe, and government came together for the 2014 Higher Education Summit at the Shangri – La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu. This was organized by Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) as part of its Higher Education and Productivity project (HEP), through the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Philippines.
